Expert panel: The impact of lack-of-diversity and AI bias in QoE research<\/h2>\n

Across the many scientific and engineering fields, there has been a push for advancing and valuing diversity, equity and inclusion. In this panel, we will discuss the impact of the lack of diversity in the general area of QoE, and what steps our community could take to alleviate it. Our panel is composed of five experts in the area. We will have a panel discussion with a questions and answers session, followed by interactive break-out sessions with each one of the panelists.<\/p>\n

She researches in the field of diversity-aware R&D with a special focus on gender, age, and social class.\u00a0She applies intersectional approaches considering the complexity and interconnectedness of social categories, i.e. how social categories \u201coverlap\u201d and create interdependent systems of discrimination.<\/p>\n

Her research interests include diversity-aware methodology of user involvement and human-centered design processes, deconstructing notions of user identities in HCI considering intersectional perspectives and critical posthumanist theories, and\u00a0technological innovations contributing to social equality and inclusion. She gathered experience in European and national projects researching in the field of critical diversity studies in HCI, Active Assisted Living, moral courage and prosocial behavior, and social cohesion.<\/p>\n

She is doctor in Signals and Images from Sorbonne Paris Nord (France) since 2012 and earned her \u2018Habilitation Universitaire\u2019 in 2017. She led a new master\u2019s program in Algeria on computer and multimedia forensics and a research team on intelligent multimedia data processing. Her research interests include QoE, biometrics, machine learning and cybersecurity. Dr. Lahoulou recently moved to Canada and is transitioning to a new research\/academic position.<\/p>\n

Prior to that, Judith has built ML teams and features in different SaaS companies, including Exact and Geophy. She also had a previous (professional) life, during which she was Assistant Professor at TU Delft, Intelligent Systems Department, working on Machine Learning and crowdsourcing for Quality of Experience assessment. Among the various things she did during this previous life, there are being a proud member of Qualinet and TPC Chair for QoMEX (2015), so she is very happy to have the opportunity to join the community again in 2021.<\/p>\n

She has published more than 150 international journal and conference papers. She is a recipient of the Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship\/Fellowship and Bangladesh Academy of Science Gold Medal for her contribution in Science and Technology. Her research interests include the areas of signal processing for speech analysis and speech enhancement, audio-visual recognition for biometric security, control system, robotics, pattern recognition,\u00a0 machine learning and deep learning for audio, video, biomedical, power signals, multimodal emotion recognition, and humanitarian technology. Prof. Shahnaz has more than 20 years of experience as an IEEE volunteer, leading impactful technical, professional, educational, industrial, women empowerment and humanitarian technology, power and energy-related Projects at national and international levels. Among her many accomplishments, she is the recipient of the 2021 Inspiring Women in Academia Award from Bangladesh brand forum, 2019 R10 Humanitarian Activities Outstanding Volunteer Award, 2016 MGA Leadership Award, 2015 WIE Inspiring Member Award, and 2013 R10 WIE Professional Volunteer Award. She has been appointed as 2021-23 Chair of\u00a0 IEEE SPS Women in Signal Processing and 2021-23 Liaison between IEEE SPS and IEEE WIE.\u00a0 She is the current Chair of IEEE Bangladesh Section. Peter Schelkens <\/strong>currently holds a professorship at the Department of Electronics and Informatics (ETRO) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). Peter Schelkens is research director at the iMinds institute founded by the Flemish government to stimulate ICT innovation. Additionally, since 1995, he has also been affiliated to the Interuniversity Microelectronics Institute (imec), Belgium, as scientific collaborator. Since 2014, he holds an ERC Consolidator Grant focusing on digital holography.\u00a0 The research interests of Peter Schelkens are situated in the field of multidimensional signal processing encompassing the representation, communication, security and rendering of these signals while especially focussing on cross-disciplinary research. In addition to his involvement in a range of standardization activities, professional associations and editorial engagements, Peter Schelkens is currently also chair of the QoMEX Steering Committee.
